Office 2000 programmers will get an updated Developer Edition in July. The product includes a new Workflow Designer tool for Exchange 2000, as well as a previously released workflow design tool for SQL Server. Both tools aim to introduce Microsoft’s premier server products to developers who currently write desktop applications on top of Office.

Office 2000 Developer Edition and Workflow

Office 2000 Developer Edition is Office 2000 Premium with some additional tools for the Visual Basic for Applications programming environment, which ships in every Office application. The upcoming release, version 1.5, offers the same features as the original Office 2000 Developer, with the addition of the two tools for writing workflow applications. Workflow applications help a group automate and track a work process, ideally without making radical changes to that process or the applications that the group currently uses. Typical workflow applications might manage processes for approving purchase requisitions, signing off expense reports, or tracking and resolving software bugs.
