Several components of Microsoft’s Desktop Optimization Pack (DOP) will be updated for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in Oct. 2009. The new versions take advantage of the new OS features to improve application virtualization performance, allow administrators to manage Group Policies across domains more effectively, diagnose unbootable PCs, and better understand reasons for unexpected application crashes. However, one component (Enterprise Desktop Virtualization) will not be updated until early 2010, although a beta version will be available for testing earlier.

Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Support

The Desktop Optimization Pack (which Microsoft calls MDOP) is a set of PC management utilities available on a subscription basis to organizations that have Software Assurance coverage for the Windows client OS. The next version, named MDOP 2009 R2, will be available by the end of Oct. 2009. The following DOP components are updated versions that will support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) 4.0, Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.5 SP1, the Diagnostics and Recovery Toolkit (DART) 6.5, and Desktop Error Monitoring (DEM) 3.5.
