A bug in a joint service pack for the 2007 editions of several Office-branded server applications can disable access to Project Server, SharePoint Server, and other products 180 days after installation of the SP. Organizations that have not yet deployed the SP might want to wait until a hotfix is available for the problem, and those that go ahead will need to re-enter their product keys to prevent the products from expiring.

Released in Apr. 2009, the 2007 Microsoft Office servers SP2 delivers an integration-tested package of bug fixes and a few new features for the following products:

  • SharePoint Server 2007 (including SharePoint Server for Internet Sites)
  • Project Server 2007
  • Forms Server 2007 (recently discontinued)
  • Search Server 2008 (including the Express edition)
  • Groove Server 2007

When applied to an installation of any of these products except Groove Server, SP2 erroneously sets an expiration date. This will make the installation inaccessible to users after 180 days, although all data and customizations are preserved.
