Analyst ReportSharePoint Spaces: Migrate Ahead of Aug. 2025
- SharePoint Spaces, a 3D overlay technology, will retire in August 2025.
- There is no Microsoft provided replacement, so customers should expect a manual migration to more than one solution.
SharePoint Spaces, a 3D overlay technology feature introduced in 2018, is deprecated and will be retired in Aug. 2025. Customers have two possible Microsoft destinations: Mesh in Teams and regular SharePoint pages, although no one solution provides all the features of Spaces. Customers may need to deploy both solutions for a full replacement of Spaces.
Immersive Interaction with Mesh in Teams
Mesh in Teams is new technology that allows users to meet in what Microsoft calls immersive spaces that gives attendees the illusion of being in the same physical location. Mesh provides a similar 3D environment to the capabilities in Spaces with the added benefit of allowing multiple users to enter a space and interact using customizable avatars that can move within the space and interact with simple objects. Mesh comes with several preconfigured immersive spaces resembling meeting areas and also supports custom immersive spaces, which are useful for creating mockups of real-world spaces for virtual tours or orientations. Meeting attendees require Microsoft 365 plans and can view Mesh meetings in the Teams client for Windows or through a Meta Quest VR headset. Mesh is included in Office 365 and Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 subscriptions.
