  • A shift in Microsoft’s on-premises report hosting strategy impacts the long-term viability of on-premises deployments.
  • Organizations that adopted Power BI Report Server to host Power BI reports on-premises should reconsider the cloud.
  • On-premises paginated reporting only environments should avoid Power BI Report Server and review continuing Software Assurance.

The roadmap for hosting traditional paginated reports and Power BI reports downgrades on-premises products, including SQL Server Reporting Services and Power BI Report Server. Both on-premises products will start to diverge from the Power BI service, where additional features will exclusively be added, creating a risk for customers who adopted Power BI reporting on-premises or who need hybrid environments.
