  • Teams town halls are a new event type for broadcasts to large audiences that incorporate capabilities of live events and webinars.
  • Live events, originally planned for retirement on Sept. 30, 2024, will instead continue to be available but will receive no new features.
  • Improvements to Teams meetings and webinars reduce the need for large, streaming-based events like town halls.
  • The Teams Premium add-on license now includes expanded capabilities for town halls.

Teams town halls, generally available as of Oct. 2023, are a new type of Teams event for few-to-many presentations to large, primarily internal audiences, such as executive presentations. Town halls offer significant improvements over live events, a feature of Microsoft’s Stream video service, which will continue to be available but will receive no new features. While town halls fill a need for events with complex production, Teams meetings and webinars now support large audiences of similar size, reducing how often organizations need streaming-based events like town halls.
