  • Organizations looking to replace on-premises Windows Server–based print servers with a cloud-based solution should consider Microsoft 365 Universal Print.
  • The Azure-based solution has matured with expanded print volumes and support for U.S. public sector (GCC) Microsoft 365 tenants.
  • Not all printer models provide native support for this service, and some jobs, such as printing labels, are not fully supported.

Universal Print is an Azure-based print management service that allows users with Microsoft 365 licenses to print from Windows client OS-based devices. It may allow organizations to retire on-premises Windows Servers whose sole role is to function as print servers. The service has matured with expanded print volumes, support for Government Community Cloud (GCC) tenants, and support for macOS-based devices in preview. However, not all printer models natively support the service, and organizations may need to maintain local print management for plotters, label printing, and other complex printing needs.
