The Windows Azure platform, Microsoft’s cloud-based application and data hosting environment, has received many updates since it became commercially available in Feb. 2010. Services and tools have been added and updated, and future production offerings are available as preview releases. Some costs have been revised, and an online portal now provides a marketplace for purchase of Azure-based applications. Azure’s customer list continues to grow, and Microsoft touts new usage scenarios. The ongoing improvements to the fledgling platform could lead to opportunities for new Azure customers and application deployments while reducing costs and development and management requirements.

The Windows Azure platform continues to offer the following primary components:

  • Windows Azure, which provides a hosted Windows Server-based OS in Microsoft data centers where customers can deploy applications and their associated data
  • SQL Azure Database, which provides a cloud-based
