  • The most commonly used end-user features of Viva are built into Microsoft 365 licenses.
  • Customers may have to buy premium add-on licenses for business leaders and IT.
  • Premium licenses come in multi-purpose bundles, but focused purchases will often make sense.

Viva is licensed using a mixture of Microsoft 365 licenses and add-ons. Figure 1 shows Viva features available to users assigned various combinations of Microsoft 365 and Viva licenses. Many more combinations could make sense, depending on which Viva ancestor products are already in use by the customer.

Viva is a brand name for components of Microsoft’s Employee Experience Platform (EXP): tools designed to improve employees’ productivity by connecting knowledge workers with peers, providing easier access to relevant information, and presenting productivity tips and guidance.

All Viva-branded components are licensed via one or more types of User SL (User Subscription License). However, some of the licenses are included with Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites, while others are extra-cost add-ons. (Prices shown here are per-user, per-month without any negotiated discounts.) Most Viva capabilities are made available via apps within Teams, which some customers will need to purchase separately from Microsoft 365 and Office 365.
