Analyst ReportWindows 7 Upgrade Options Trimmed
Large organizations that want to standardize on Windows 7 will have to carefully consider PC purchases before that OS version ships in Oct. 2009. As with previous OS versions, Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 for PCs purchased just before its ship date, but restrictions on the upgrade program put it out of reach for firms purchasing more than 25 PCs. Microsoft is offering discounts and improved terms on OS upgrades purchased in volume licensing, but some large organizations might still prefer to delay PC purchases until after Windows 7 has shipped.
No Technology Guarantee for Large Companies
Customers who purchase new PCs between June 26, 2009, and Jan. 31, 2010, will receive the right to use Windows 7 on those PCs at no cost. This program, called the Windows Upgrade Option, resembles past “technology guarantee” programs that offer customers a free upgrade to a new OS version for PCs bought just before that version ships. That in turn helps Microsoft and its partners, by encouraging customers to keep purchasing PCs rather than waiting for the new OS version.
