Betas of native 64-bit Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 for the AMD Athlon and Opteron processors are now available to MSDN subscribers. AMD’s processors might deliver better performance for existing 32-bit applications than the corresponding Intel offerings. This could particularly benefit organizations that will be running a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit applications until all the applications they need to run are available in native 64-bit versions.

Final release of Windows with AMD 64-bit support is expected in the first half of 2004.

Formally known as Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems, and Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit Extended Systems, these releases will follow already-released versions of Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and SQL Server 2000 for the 64-bit Intel Itanium processor. AMD and Intel have used different strategies to develop 64-bit processors, with Intel breaking away from existing 32-bit architecture and AMD extending the standard Intel-compatible 32-bit architecture to 64 bits.
