Semi-Annual Channel versions of Windows Server are no longer supported or available.

  • Windows Server 2004, the latest SAC version of Windows Server, is generally available.
  • The version will benefit deployment of container-based applications, particularly those using the .NET Framework.
  • Documentation of the version remains sparse.

Windows Server 2004 (also called “20H1”) is the latest Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) version of Windows Server. Windows Server on the SAC focuses on container-based applications and new application development, with limited utility when deployed as a VM. Customers using Windows Server for infrastructure roles should deploy Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) versions of Windows Server like Windows Server 2019 or 2016.

Windows Server 2004 Provides Incremental Benefits

Windows Server SAC versions are released twice a year and provide 18 months of support. They include a Server Core installation mode intended for VMs and offer container images of Server Core and Nano Server for use with Docker container-based applications. SAC versions do not include traditional Windows Server roles or software-defined data center roles like Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking, and shielded VMs.
