As more companies give users laptops to take off-site or to move between locations in the company, good data synchronization becomes increasingly important. Data synchronization supports two main uses of laptops:

Taking shared data on the road. Users can copy files from a network or a desktop PC to the laptop, make changes while disconnected, and synchronize the data when reconnected. For example, suppose a sales representative takes a laptop out of the office with a customer list copied from the office network. The sales rep can make changes to the list while on the road and offline. Then on returning to the office, data synchronization updates the copy of the customer list on the network with the changes made while offline.

Switching between laptop and desktop. Users who use both a desktop and a laptop can keep important data consistent between them. For example, a sales rep that uses IE on a desktop in-house and on a laptop off-site can ensure that both machines have the same set of favorites.
