Visio Standard and Professional follow the historical support policies and release pattern of Office, while Visio Pro for Office 365 follows Office 365 ProPlus. This illustration shows releases and retirements for currently supported or planned versions of the three Visio editions. (Visio Pro for Office 365 versions have a two-digit year and month, for example, 1509.)

Visio Standard and Professional versions have appeared every two to three years, with occasional service packs (labeled SP in the diagram) to deliver minor feature improvements and tested packages of fixes. Microsoft supports each version for 10 years: five years of Mainstream support and five years of Extended support. After Mainstream support ends, Microsoft will not support a version with Office 365 services, such as SharePoint Online, although the version might continue to work with the services for some time. After Extended support ends, security updates and other fixes require a custom support contract, which is expensive and not available to all customers. Visio 2007 will leave Extended support Oct. 10, 2017.
