TypeScript, an open source, Microsoft-designed programming language based on JavaScript, offers features that could help organizations build large-scale cross-platform Web applications that are more robust, secure, and maintainable than those that use standard JavaScript. TypeScript is compatible with JavaScript, so existing JavaScript applications can be converted to TypeScript and developers’ JavaScript skills can be leveraged. TypeScript 2.0 and Visual Studio tools for the language were released in Sept. 2016, and popular third-party tools can be used for TypeScript development. However, developer training is required for adoption; a familiarity with JavaScript and languages such as C++ and C# helps greatly.
