Data Protection Manager (DPM) backup software in System Center 2016 brings improvements to backup of virtualized systems based on Windows Server 2016 and Hyper-V. In particular, when used with a new change tracking feature in Windows Server 2016, DPM 2016 allows more resilient backup of virtual machines (VMs), including access-restricted VMs. However, DPM cannot work with some Windows Server 2016 configurations that are likely to be used with Hyper-V. DPM can be acquired stand-alone, as part of a System Center suite, or purchased through an add-on to the Operations Management Suite.

What Is Data Protection Manager?

System Center Data Protection Manager enables network backup to tape- and disk-based storage, including direct-attached and storage area network drives. DPM can perform backups many times per day, thereby reducing file restore times and the risk of lost data due to gaps in time between backups. It also lets users restore files without IT assistance, removing a source of numerous help desk calls.
