SidebarWindows 10 Channels
Computers running Windows 10 receive new versions from one of several channels.
Windows Insider Preview
The Windows Insider Preview (WIP) provides experienced IT users and Windows enthusiasts with prereleases of each upcoming version to allow for evaluation of new features and significant changes. WIP users can provide feedback about the changes to Microsoft.
WIP is not intended for production use, and it could create problems that require reinstalling the OS or reconstructing data. Each computer that receives releases from the WIP is in the Fast Ring (which gets more frequent but unstable releases) or the Slow Ring (less frequent, more stable releases).
Semi-annual Channel
Most business computers for production use should receive new Windows 10 versions on the Semi-annual Channel (formerly the Current Branch for Business).
When a new version is released to this channel, it is generally available for download via Windows Update and the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and through the Volume Licensing Service Center. At initial release, a new version released to the Semi-annual Channel should work on the most current devices and with the most common applications. For example, a new version released to the Semi-annual Channel should work on Surface hardware with Office applications without any major issues.
