Analyst ReportWindows 10 Defender Protection Roadmap
Windows 10 will gain features to address prevention, detection, and response to malware and advanced threats in versions promoted to organizations in late 2017 and early 2018. Advanced persistent threats involve skilled adversaries exploiting vulnerabilities or using social engineering to run malware to destroy, expose, steal, or hold data for ransom. Organizations concerned about such threats will welcome the new capabilities and be able to better configure and manage Defender through Microsoft systems management products. However, these features require considerable expertise and additional User Subscription Licenses, and they do not improve security of the Windows population as a whole.
Features Introduced with Windows 10
Several features introduced with Windows 10 protect the OS against malware, including Windows Defender Antivirus, SmartScreen, and Device Guard. In addition, the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit can be downloaded and installed on Windows 10.
Defender Antivirus (AV) provides protection against malware such as viruses and worms. Defender AV uses a preinstalled agent to scan files and downloads by using known malware signatures to detect, quarantine, and remove any malware. Updated signature files are downloaded automatically from Windows Update. Defender AV is a feature of all Windows 10 editions.
