Azure Event Grid, which became available as a preview in Aug. 2017, is a service that routes events from Azure services and external applications to other Azure services and external applications that perform actions based on those events. Event Grid could simplify event-driven (also called reactive) application and process implementations for developers and IT staff by reducing custom code and resource requirements. However, the service incurs costs that could be avoided using other techniques for event-driven implementations, and it has limited functionality in its preview state.

Event-Driven Design Eased by Brokers

Event-driven design is commonly used to integrate services, applications, and devices. The model allows each of these entities to focus on its functionality while the others await the results upon which they will react. Examples of the design include the following:

  • A source code control service sends an event to a developer collaboration application when code is checked
