Windows 10 co-management allows organizations to perform Intune-based management of Windows 10 devices in coordination with System Center Configuration Manager. This could help customers move from Configuration Manager to Intune mobile device management (MDM), particularly customers with a significant investment in Windows 7 who are planning to move to Windows 10. However, co-management only allows certain management tasks to be switched at this time, and customers might need to license additional Microsoft technology to implement co-management.

Management of Windows Is Changing

Co-management uses MDM technology of the Intune hosted service and Configuration Manager to manage a device concurrently.

Beginning with Windows 10, Microsoft is moving toward MDM technology to manage the Windows client OS. MDM involves using built-in device management interfaces to configure, manage, and update the OS on devices. MDM has gained ground because it works with devices outside an organization’s network perimeter and which the organization does not image or otherwise control. MDM takes on the roles of technologies such as Active Directory (AD) Group Policy (GP) or System Center Configuration Manager, which were designed for when Windows PCs were usually company-owned and primarily connected to organizational networks.
