  • Azure Location Based Services provides geospatial data through rendered maps and APIs.
  • The service could be useful for mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and other types of applications with mapping and geospatial data requirements.

Azure Location Based Services (LBS), in preview, allows developers to build applications that require geospatial data such as maps, routes, traffic, and point-of-interest and time zone information. The service could improve performance for Azure-based line-of-business applications by eliminating the use of mapping services external to Azure, such as Bing Maps and Google Maps. A free tier could keep costs low for light- to medium-use applications. However, some popular mapping features, such as aerial images and street-side views, are not offered.

Map Control and API Capabilities

LBS offers a JavaScript control for rendering maps and RESTful APIs for manipulating the maps or consuming geospatial data to be used separately from LBS-produced maps. The capabilities of the control and APIs include the following:
