  • Azure Front Door, in preview, enables load and traffic balancing of HTTP traffic to Web-based applications hosted in Azure.
  • The service is based on technology used internally by Microsoft for services such as Office 365 and Bing.
  • Front Door is limited to HTTP traffic; different services must be used for other protocols.

Azure Front Door Service allows organizations to define, manage, and monitor the global routing for an application’s Web traffic by directing inbound traffic to the Azure region that represents the nearest point of presence (POP) and optimizing connectivity between POPs and application back-end infrastructure. Front Door could be useful to organizations deploying large-scale global or multi-region Web applications on Azure.

Service Overview

Front Door provides services for network performance, load balancing, and redirection of HTTP traffic into Microsoft’s network to reach customer applications hosted in Azure. It provides global edge sites (referred to as POPs) and will route Web traffic to the POP with the best performance for an available instance of the customer application, in addition to providing failover to alternate POPs for high availability.
