  • The latest Project Server version will mainly interest organizations that are also upgrading to the latest Windows Server and SharePoint Server.
  • A new Microsoft-hosted Project service due in 2019 will replace Project Online and eventually Project Server.

Project Server is a multitier server application for managing project schedules and resource data, reporting time and status, and analyzing an organization’s projects. Project Server 2019, the latest version, will be supported until July 2026. However, Project Server will likely not receive another version after 2019, and the related Microsoft-hosted service, Project Online, will be gradually replaced by a completely new online service.

Project Server 2019 became generally available in Oct. 2018. It delivers minor improvements previously released for Project Online, such as the following:

  • Multiple team members can accept a task, rather than having the first team member claim the task exclusively
