The capabilities of Azure Backup vary significantly, depending on how it is deployed. The chart here lists the capabilities of Azure Backup when it is deployed stand-alone with its own Azure Backup agent software, with the Azure Backup Server or Data Protection Manager (DPM) software on-premises, or in concert with the Microsoft-hosted Azure IaaS VM Backup service.

1. Stand-alone Azure Backup use, and all Windows client support, is limited to file or folder and volume backup only, which can include system state; no bare-metal recovery is possible, unlike Windows Server. If application state capture of an on-premises server is required, Azure Backup Server or DPM should be used instead.

2. Linux backup operations are considered to be application consistent. Organizations may need to perform manual operations prior to backup or post-recovery in order to ensure data is consistent and applications are recovered correctly.
