  • Team Foundation Server is an on-premises server product for software project management, including source code control and developer collaboration.
  • TFS 2018 Update 3 is the latest version.
  • The product is being rebranded to Azure DevOps Server with the 2019 version, of which a release candidate is available.
  • The product mirrors, but lags, the functionality of the hosted Azure DevOps service (formerly Visual Studio Team Services).

Team Foundation Server (TFS) provides source code control, build, testing, release management, and collaboration tools to manage software development projects for teams of any size. The product complements, but does not require, the Visual Studio (VS) integrated development environment (IDE). TFS has been updated with numerous features since it debuted in 2005, such as comprehensive tools for running projects using Agile methodologies. However, Azure DevOps, which is a hosted service that delivers TFS functionality, is a higher priority for Microsoft.
