- Azure Automation enables management and performs automated tasks on servers and other Azure resources.
- Runbooks and Desired State Configuration are used to manage and enforce the state of servers.
- Azure Automation can be used with servers in Azure and on-premises, as well as servers in the Amazon Web Services Elastic Cloud Compute service.
- It provides similar capabilities to System Center Orchestrator, but the two are not directly interchangeable.
Azure Automation helps automate deployment, management, and other repetitive IT processes. It has evolved into Microsoft’s primary hosted service for configuring on-premises servers and cloud resources, offering an alternative to some System Center components.
Service Overview
Azure Automation executes runbooks, compilations of workflows or procedures, and operations that run on the PowerShell Workflow engine, which is often used to perform deployment, configuration, or management tasks. Azure Automation can also configure and enforce settings and install updates on managed Windows Server and Linux systems.
