Mar. 6, 2024: Cognitive search has been rebranded Azure AI Search and incorporated into the Azure AI Services line. See: https://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/members/roadmap/ref/ai-services.

Azure Cognitive Search (formerly Azure Search) offers a hosted, tunable, full-text search service for application developers.

Service Overview

Cognitive Search provides full-text search of data that is delivered to the service. Customer-implemented processes can push data to the service to index it for search, or customers can use indexers provided by Cognitive Search that can crawl and index some types of data sources. An application can then submit full-text queries to the service and obtain matching records from the index ranked by relevance to the query. Cognitive Search can use Artificial Intelligence routines, called skills, from Azure Cognitive Services to analyze content during indexing. For example, skills can translate text or recognize images.

The service could be useful for external-facing applications (such as customer portals) that need to search data from a mix of document stores and databases and for applications that analyze log files and other unstructured data sources.
