Azure HDInsight is a managed Azure service for deploying clusters based on Apache Hadoop ecosystem technologies, including Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Kafka, and HBase. The service remains supported, but its roadmap now points toward maintenance and migration rather than modernization.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

No new HDInsight service version or major feature release has been announced. HDInsight 5.1—generally available since Nov. 1, 2023—remains the only supported version. Recent activity reinforces the view that HDInsight is being sustained rather than advanced. Microsoft has shipped security and Resource Provider maintenance, retired supporting options, and—most significantly—begun telling customers to evaluate replacement platforms. Customers should expect critical security fixes, image maintenance, Resource Provider fixes, and forced infrastructure updates, but shouldn’t plan around a future 5.2 or 6.0 release unless Microsoft publishes a commitment.
