RoadmapManaged Instance for Apache Cassandra
Azure Managed Instance for Apache Cassandra is a platform service that runs unmodified open-source Apache Cassandra on Azure VMs and supports the Cassandra Query Language (CQL). Cassandra is a wide-column NoSQL database used for write-heavy, geographically distributed workloads that need linear scale-out and tunable consistency. The service supports a traditional Cassandra cluster configuration with datacenters (nodes) that can reside within the service, on-premises, or other clouds, providing a true hybrid deployment.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)
The service’s direction is to track Apache Cassandra and little else. The one substantial change of the past two years was adding Cassandra 5.0, which brought the upstream project’s storage-attached indexes, vector search, and dynamic data masking into the service.
Microsoft hasn’t added any other generally available features in that time. The service works and it’s patched, but capabilities Microsoft has added to comparable Azure database services—Entra ID authentication, elastic capacity, links into Microsoft Fabric and the Azure AI stack—haven’t arrived here, and capabilities announced as previews years ago are still previews. Customers should plan on the service standing still and treat the portability of unmodified Cassandra as the hedge that makes that tolerable.
