Microsoft Search
Microsoft Search is an upgraded Microsoft 365 search engine that includes user and administrative interfaces for improving the search experience within an organization. The service combines in-house Office search and content provided via Microsoft Graph with other relevant data, including Bing search results and third-party application data, and context-specific application features. The service is similar to competitive offerings such as Google Cloud Search.
Microsoft Search capabilities are also the basis of the search functions of other services, such as Viva Topics.
Capabilities and Limitations
Microsoft Search produces search results by combining results from internal and external content:
Internally, Search uses information from several Microsoft 365 sources, including SharePoint Online sites and files, information about people (like a Delve search), and content from Microsoft 365 Groups (including Teams chats and files and other content stored in a Group). When a user searches on a term, the results display not only indexed content from within files but also additional information such as relevant excerpts of recent Teams chats, Outlook content, or People cards about other users in the organization. Content results are combined from across file types. For example, searching in Word would show Word documents as well as PowerPoint presentations, from which the user could choose to open directly or pull slides.
