Power BI is Microsoft’s primary data visualization and data modeling offering. It includes cloud and on-premises components that are used collectively to build datasets (also called semantic data models) and to create and share reports, dashboards, and other business intelligence (BI) content.

Overall Near- and Long-Term Roadmap

Although Fabric has overtaken Power BI as Microsoft’s most important priority in terms of data and analytics, there is no need for existing customers to panic. Microsoft’s plan is to integrate Power BI with Fabric-hosted data as well as other Azure services. Furthermore, Fabric’s back-end platform, collaboration, and security features are all based on the Power BI service, which means customers can continue using Power BI and include other Fabric services with little impact to their Power BI deployments. 

Back-end Platforms Plans

Cloud

The biggest change in back-end platforms was the Jan. 2025 retirement of Premium P capacity licensing and purchasing options. Customers using Premium P will need to migrate to Fabric capacities when their agreements renew. (Note: Most deployments are not affected, including those licensed under Power BI Pro, Premium Per User, Premium EM, and Azure Power BI Embedded. Additionally, Power BI in sovereign government clouds is not currently affected.)
