Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is an Azure-hosted service that provides virtualized desktop management. It is a hosted alternative to Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Windows 365. AVD on Azure Stack HCI enables the VMs that host virtual desktops to be hosted on-premises for purposes such as compliance or access to on-premises resources, but the service still depends on the hosted AVD management plane.

Azure Virtual Desktop follows Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle. It became generally available in Sept. 2019 and is currently in support. (It does not have a known retirement date.)

The Modern Lifecycle provides support only for current versions of software or online services. Although Microsoft sometimes discusses new features, and often provides them in some form of preview, the availability of a new feature in a preview does not accurately forecast when or if it may become generally available.
