Azure Communication Services is a set of cloud services and APIs that allow developers to include digital communication capabilities such as Teams voice and video calling, chat, SMS, and Exchange e-mail messaging in their applications. Microsoft maintains the platform software and infrastructure behind Communication Services, enabling developers to add communication features with less infrastructure investment than self-hosting.

Communication Services development slowed in mid-2025, most likely because Microsoft shifted focus to its Dynamics 365 Contact Center service, a major consumer of Communication Services. However, the service remains a mature product and the company is unlikely to shut the service down in the next five years.

Near Term (2026)

Communication Services has received no major improvements since July 2025. The most likely explanation: The team is focusing on its principal internal customer, the Dynamics contact center software, and new features (such as Teams Phone integration) that entered preview in July 2025. A possible secondary factor: In Jan. 2026, Exchange Online dropped a plan to enforce tighter per-mailbox limits on external mailings. The plan might have steered some business to Communication Services, the only other Microsoft cloud service for large external mailings through Exchange.
