Cosmos DB in Fabric is a special deployment of a Cosmos DB NoSQL document database that’s primarily accessed from inside Microsoft Fabric. The main benefit for users is quick deployment and scaling of a Cosmos DB database without having to use the Cosmos DB service directly or pay for it separately; the cost of using the database is deducted from a Fabric capacity’s resources. The deployment has fewer features than a full Cosmos DB deployment and is primarily for departmental use or as a holding location for data used in analytics. The deployment scales itself based on demand rather than being sized by an administrator, and the data is automatically mirrored into OneLake.

Product: Cosmos DB for Fabric

Licensing: Fabric

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft announced the service at Build in 2025 and took it to general availability (GA) in Nov. 2025 together with mirroring for Cosmos DB accounts. The intent is plain: give developers a document store that’s already inside the analytics platform so that application data is available to reports, notebooks, and agents without a pipeline, and make Fabric the place where operational and analytical data meet.
