Azure Data Box is a family of physical devices and services that help customers transfer data to Azure (and some from Azure). The offerings include the following:
Offline data transfer devices are stand-alone appliances that customers temporarily connect to on-premises systems to load data for bulk shipping to Azure Storage.
Online data transfer products include a gateway service delivered as an on-premises VM that provides enhanced options and security for network-based transfer of data to Azure.
Offline Data Transfer Devices
Offline data transfer devices are physical appliances that customers rent from Microsoft, load with data from on-premises devices or storage, and ship to a Microsoft facility for data import into Azure Storage. Customers can then keep the imported data in Azure Storage or use it to populate other Azure services.
Customers will likely use offline data transfer offerings for the following:
- Long-term archiving for online storage that could let customers avoid purchasing
