Azure Database for MySQL is a managed relational database service based on the community edition of MySQL. It’s best suited for organizations moving existing MySQL applications to Azure or using the open-source database for new cloud applications. Microsoft manages the underlying infrastructure, backups, maintenance, and availability while retaining compatibility with common MySQL tools and applications. Customers have less administrative control than with MySQL installed on a VM.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft is investing in operational maturity rather than in the database engine itself, which is controlled by Oracle. The service has gained a supported MySQL 8.4 long-term release, faster high-availability failover, more customer-controlled backup and recovery, and new connections into Microsoft Fabric and AI agent tooling.

That work sits alongside a compressed support calendar. The two engine versions carrying most of the installed base both leave Standard support in early 2026, and servers left running those releases are enrolled automatically into a paid Extended support period. For most customers, the defining event of this period is a mandatory upgrade project with a billing consequence attached, not new capabilities.
