Azure DocumentDB is a managed, MongoDB-compatible document database built on the open-source DocumentDB engine, which stores and indexes documents inside a PostgreSQL engine. It provides an on-premises-like environment that supports lift-and-shift migrations with minimal change. The Azure service scales compute and storage separately, although storage is based on a provisioned size rather than consumed.

The service was previously branded Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore and although it’s the same service with a new name, Microsoft announced Azure DocumentDB’s general availability on Nov. 18, 2025.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft spent 2025–2026 turning a Cosmos DB deployment option into a product with its own identity. The engine was open-sourced and handed to the Linux Foundation, the service was renamed and taken to general availability (GA), the enterprise controls buyers had been waiting for—Microsoft Entra ID authentication and customer-managed keys—reached GA, and the AI retrieval story was filled in with native vector indexing and hybrid search. Cost controls arrived alongside burstable entry tiers, autoscale, and reserved capacity.
