OneLake is the core data management component in Microsoft Fabric. It can host and query most data formats that are used for analytics and reporting, and it can connect to and share data with a variety of external data solutions. Its primary purpose is to host data solutions (lake houses, data warehouses, and streaming databases) that are built by and shared among the Fabric experiences. It is also based on open source technologies, providing an attractive option for organizations that want to centralize analytic data on Azure but prefer to avoid the expense of Microsoft proprietary technology like SQL Server data warehouse.

Near Term (2024–2025)

The near-term roadmap for OneLake continues to evolve and Directions recommends that customers wait for some parts of the service to mature. The core Lakehouse feature is solid, but customers may find that waiting for certain areas of the service (security, lake houses, data warehouse, connectors, and others) to mature will decrease their overall effort and cost. For example, Fabric now supports Iceberg data formats and Snowflake databases, which means customers who used the existing query tools and spent the effort to architect and integrate Fabric with Snowflake applications when the service was first released should have waited for the new features and saved themselves time and money. It is likely that OneLake will continue to change as Microsoft responds to customer demand and looks for new opportunities to expand the service.
