OneLake is the core data management component in Microsoft Fabric. It can host and query most data formats that are used for analytics and reporting, and it can connect to and share data with a variety of external data solutions. Its primary purpose is to host data solutions (lakehouses, data warehouses, and streaming databases) that are built by and shared among the Fabric experiences. It’s based on open-source technologies, providing an attractive option for organizations that want to centralize analytic data on Azure but avoid the expense of Microsoft proprietary technology like SQL Server data warehouse.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Recent OneLake updates improved security, interoperability, and data access, but the larger story is the roadmap. Through 2027, Microsoft is pushing OneLake toward broader governance, metered mirroring enhancements, AI-assisted transformation, and agent access—changes that make planning for security roles, capacity costs, and preview dependencies more important than the individual updates themselves.
