Queue Storage (also known as Azure Queues) is an offering in the Azure Storage collection of services. It provides simple, scalable messaging for storing and retrieving messages between components of a distributed application. Rather than components talking directly with each other, they can exchange messages and data through Queues. The advantage of using a messaging service is that it decouples different parts of an overall application so they can scale separately and respond to other requests more quickly. It provides a holding place for messages that gives an extra layer of durability in case one part of the overall application fails.

Product: Queue Storage

Licensing: Queue Storage

Near-Term Roadmap (2026–2027)

Queue Storage is a mature service with little product-specific development. Its primary recent update was the Jan. 2026 general availability of user delegation Shared Access Signature (SAS), which allows applications to grant limited, temporary access using Entra credentials rather than storage account keys. This reduces the risk associated with distributing broadly privileged account keys and gives organizations greater control over application access.
