RoadmapSQL Edge
Azure SQL Edge retired in Sept. 2025. For more details and migration advice, see the Directions report “Azure SQL Edge to Retire in Sept. 2025: Limited Migration Options.”
Azure SQL Edge was a small-footprint deployment option for SQL Server that runs in a Linux container and includes a special edition of SQL Server’s database engine optimized for low-powered devices, gateways, and edge servers running near IoT devices. It can process relational data, nonrelational JSON data, and graph and time-series data, and it includes an engine for capturing and processing real-time data streams.
Product: SQL Edge
Directions Recommends
Consider non-Microsoft alternatives. There is no direct or simple migration to another Microsoft solution, which means any migration will require significant code changes, new connections, and effort. Customers should consider alternative products and offerings.
