Azure Cosmos DB is a multimodal database service that supports multiple data formats and provides APIs that emulate open-source query languages. In the core services, developers can work with several different data types, accessed through the Cosmos DB database engine, that allows the data to share security settings and replication features. The service provides simplified provisioning, global scaling, data partitioning, and data replication features to support global distribution of data without configuring separate databases for each location or data format or writing complex code to move and integrate data.

The service will appeal to customers with complex application requirements and who have expertise in one of the supported open-source query languages like SQL or MongoDB. For example, the capabilities of the service could benefit an online commerce site that requires regional stored data for low latency and uses a combination of structured data for transactions and document data for customer reviews.
