Office 365 (formerly code-named Union) is a line of service plans due in mid-2011 that will combine Microsoft-hosted online services with subscription licenses to the Office 2010 desktop software. Like the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) that it will replace, Office 365 could reduce IT costs and free up personnel for business-specific tasks. Office 365 could also interest IT organizations that want a single, predictable, per-user bill for Office and collaboration applications.

Office 365 subscription plans will include the following Microsoft-hosted services:

  • Exchange Online, built on Exchange Server 2010
  • SharePoint Online, built on SharePoint Server 2010
  • Lync Online, built on Lync Server 2010.

Exchange Online and SharePoint Online are updates of existing online services; Lync Online will take over the role of two existing services, Live Meeting (Web conferencing) and Communications Online (presence, instant messaging, and two-way voice, video, and application sharing).
