Power BI Report Server is a planned reporting component of SQL Server 2017 that provides customers with the ability to host and share Power BI reports on-premises using local hardware. This will enable organizations to use Power BI technology and report design tools, but control sensitive data and reports locally, which is important for customers with regulatory and security issues that preclude the use of the Microsoft-hosted Power BI online service.

Overview

Power BI Report Server is a superset of SQL Server 2017 Reporting Services and includes all the features of Reporting Services, plus the ability to host Power BI reports. It is deployed and managed like SQL Server Reporting Services, and for some organizations it might be the right alternative to deploying SQL Server Reporting Services.

The first release can connect to SQL Server Analysis Services data models only, which provides a conduit to other data sources; however, future updates will provide direct connection to more data sources. Compared to the hosted Power BI Service, customers are responsible for the hardware and the deployment and maintenance of the environment, including the underlying Windows Server OS.
