Search Server 2010 and the free Search Server Express 2010 are built on the enterprise search features of SharePoint Server 2010. These features help workers locate internal information in a wide range of formats stored in intranets, messaging systems, shared files on networks, and databases.

The 2010 versions of these products include many improvements over their predecessors (which were based on SharePoint Server 2007 SP1), particularly in the areas of relevance, querying, and extensibility.

Search Server 2010 requires only a server license (US$15,961); clients issuing search queries do not need SharePoint Client Access Licenses. Search Server includes all of SharePoint Server 2010’s major search capabilities except for a set of features that Microsoft calls People Search, which helps users to find others in their organization with particular areas of expertise. People Search features are not available in Search Server 2010 because they depend on social networking features that are not licensed with Search Server.
