Microsoft sometimes decides that a particular social issue, such as computer security, Internet privacy, or environmental sustainability, warrants a dedicated team. Like the Citizenship team, these groups work with other groups from throughout the company (including the Citizenship team itself) to align Microsoft’s business practices with a particular social issue.
However, these groups differ from the Citizenship team in several respects:
- They are focused on a single issue
- They have more direct influence on product design—for example, many Microsoft products must now go through a Security Development Lifecycle originally designed by the Trustworthy Computing team
- Externally, they focus on enlisting partners and communicating with customers, while the Citizenship team tends to focus more on governments and nongovernmental organizations
- They are generally organized in a product group or under Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie rather than being part of the legal
