Microsoft revenues for the fiscal 2000 second quarter (ending Dec. 31, 1999) were US$6.11 billion, an 18% increase over the US$5.20 billion reported for the same quarter a year ago. Net income and earnings per share (EPS) reached US$2.44 billion and US$0.44 respectively, a 22% increase compared to US$1.98 billion income and US$0.36 EPS in the corresponding fiscal 1999 quarter. Second quarter’s earnings include a one-time charge of approximately US$0.03 per share related to the settlement of a lawsuit with Caldera; excluding this charge, EPS would have been US$0.47.

Revenue

The sections below explore in detail how the product groups, distribution channels, and income generated by investments contributed to revenue. Also examined is deferred revenue, also known as “unearned revenue,” which reflects sales that won’t be recognized as revenue until subsequent quarters.

(Ed. Note: Unless otherwise stated, all quarterly revenue comparisons are made in relation to the corresponding quarter of fiscal 1999.)
