Microsoft has shipped the general release version of SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition (SQL Server CE), a stripped-down edition of SQL Server for the mobile computing platform. Other enterprise database providers already have a strong presence on Windows CE, but Microsoft cannot give up this competitive space without impacting SQL Server’s ability to provide enterprise solutions. While lacking features of SQL Server, SQL Server CE still retains the query and replication capabilities needed to support disconnected database applications, such as mobile order taking. Shipping as part of SQL Server Developer Edition, it may be redistributed at no extra cost, although normal license fees apply to SQL Server back-end connections.

The Market for Portable Databases

A major initiative is underway in the enterprise database space to improve the computing capacity that highly mobile employees can conveniently carry with them. In this arena, even a laptop is too bulky. Mobile relational databases on sub-laptop devices are receiving increasing attention as tools for improving support for field personnel, such as roving sales people or field service technicians. Convenient to carry while leaving hands free, these devices can handle sizeable information sets, like product catalogs and inventory counts, and support custom applications, such as order taking and diagnostic services.
