The key architectural elements of BizTalk Server are the BizTalk Messaging and the BizTalk Orchestration Services. The Messaging Service processes the business documents (with their business data) and exchanges them between applications. The Orchestration Service manages the overall process.

Take the example of a purchaser ordering an item from a supplier. To place an order, the purchaser’s application needs to interchange data with the supplier’s application. It submits the order as a business document to BizTalk Server. A business analyst has associated the inbound document with a BizTalk Messaging Service Channel (1), which specifies how the inbound document is parsed, validated, and mapped to the format that supplier’s application requires. Based on the properties of the Messaging Port (2) associated with the channel, the outbound document is delivered to the BizTalk Orchestration Server Port (3), which makes the business data available for the action as defined in the XLANG Schedule.
