SidebarPocket PC 2002 Manufacturers and Devices
Pocket PC (PPC) 2002 devices can be divided into three categories: standard, specialized, and cell-phone integrated.
At press time, at least 11 hardware manufacturers are or will soon be shipping PPC 2002-based devices.
Each OEM is responsible for integrating the appropriate drivers and for testing, end-user support, and service.
Standard PPC 2002 Devices
Manufacturers differentiate their PPC 2002 offerings on factors such as the following:
- Styling
- Overall dimensions
- Amount of RAM
- User controls (the number and placement of buttons and scroll wheels)
- Accessories
- Expansion options.
Some include expansion slots in the main body, while others use expansion “sleds” that mate with the device. In either case, the manufacturer might offer different slots to accommodate Compact Flash (CF) cards, PC Cards, MultiMedia Cards (MMC), or Secure Digital (SD) cards.
Manufacturers of standard PPC 2002 devices include Acer, Audiovox, Casio, Compaq, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard (HP), NEC, and Toshiba. (To see what a typical PPC device looks like, see the illustration “Compaqs IPaq 3800 Pocket PC“.)
