A large-scale Project 2002 configuration can consist of user interface, application, and data layers.
User interface. Project 2002, like its predecessor, offers two client options for the user interface: a browser-based client (Project Web Access or PWA), a set of ActiveX controls that enables team members to view projects and report their own status; and the desktop Project application for project managers to create and modify projects.
Application. The application layer includes Web servers running Project Server, which manages project data, and possibly SharePoint Team Services (STS), which manages material associated with a project such as documents and discussions. The application layer can also include an Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server for notifying team members with SMTP mail. Clients exchange data with Project Server in XML format over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and with STS using the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) protocol. Application Center can be used to configure and monitor the Web servers in this layer.
